The Federated States of Micronesia /ˌmaɪkroʊˈniːʒə/ is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, north of Papua New Guinea. The country is a sovereign state in free association with the United States of America. The Federated States of Micronesia were formerly part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, a United Nations Trust Territory under U.S. administration. In 1979 they adopted a constitution, and in 1986 independence was attained under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
Religion in the Federated States of Micronesia[]
Christianity is the religion of the majority of the people in the Federated States of Micronesia, Roman Catholicism and Protestantism being the two most popular denominations. Most immigrants are Catholics from the Philippines.
Minority religions include Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Baha'i Faith. About 1% of the people of the Federated States of Micronesia are Buddhists.
The constitution guarantees religious freedom, which is largely respected.
