Er was the oldest son of Judah and Shua, described in the Book of Genesis. He is later mentioned in the Book of 1 Chronicles for genealogical purposes. In the Genesis narrative, he was meant to be married to Tamar by his father Judah, but was "wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him" (Genesis 38:7). Er's crimes or his cause of death were never explicitly stated.
