Colombia (pronounced /kəˈlʌmbiə/), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia, pronounced [reˈpuβlika ðe koˈlombja], is a country in northwestern South America. It is named after Christopher Columbus. Colombia is bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama; and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. Colombia also shares maritime borders with Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Colombia is the twenty-sixth largest nation in the world and the fourth largest in South America. It has the twenty-ninth largest population in the world and the second largest in South America, after Brazil. Colombia has the third largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico and the United States of America.

The population of Colombia is 90% Roman Catholic. Religious minorities in Colombia include Protestants, Mormons, Jews and Muslims. Less than 0.1% of the people of Colombia are Buddhists.
