The Republic of Cape Verde (pronounced /ˌkeɪp ˈvɜ:rd/; Portuguese: Cabo Verde, pronounced [ˈkabu ˈveɾdɨ]) is an island country, spanning an archipelago located in the Macaronesia ecoregion of the North Atlantic Ocean, off the western coast of Africa, opposite Mauritania and Senegal. Its size is little over 4,000 km² with an estimated population of just over 500,000. The capital of Cape Verde is Praia. The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century (though there may have been earlier discoveries), and attained independence from Portugal in 1975.

Christianity is the religion of 95% of the population. Roman Catholicism is the most popular Christian denomination, followed by 85% of Cape Verde's people. There are small Muslim and Baha'i communities. Less than 1% of Cape Verde's people are atheists. Less than 0.1% are Buddhists.
