Palau /pəˈlaʊ/, officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pelew.

Religion in Palau

Palau is a Christian-majority country. According to the 2005 census, Roman Catholicism is the most popular Christian denomination, followed by 49.4% of the population, 21.3% of the population are Protestants and 8% follow Modekngei, a religion that combines Christianity with traditional Palauan beliefs.

There is a small Muslim community, largely made up of people who can trace their ancestry to India or Bangladesh, and a small Jewish community. About 0.1% of the people of Palau are Buddhists.
